As part of implementing Korea’s New Deal Policy, KEPCO E&C signed a cooperation agreement on “technology cooperation in future aviation-related industries” with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority on June 21.

The agreement was pursued in order to identify new business models and seek the mutual growth of the two government agencies through strengthened cooperation in future aviation-related sectors like drones and urban air mobility (UAM). The agreement signing ceremony was attended by President Kim Sung-arm of the KEPCO E&C and President Kwon Yong-bok of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and other officials of the two agencies.

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority has established a drone safety management system. With the goal of commercializing UAM by 2025, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority has been assisting with the development of the government’s urban air mobility system as a member of UAM Team Korea. As a company with a successful track record in completing projects for Incheon Airport and airport rail express service, we are developing painting and inspection drones with the support of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gimcheon City. We are also building a drone industry ecosystem that will support both our company and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME).

The two agencies, which happen to be located in Gimcheon, the city in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province designated as a drone special zone, agreed to collaborate in the following areas: jointly pursue new businesses in future aviation areas like drones and UAM, lead the creation of an international standard on building/managing a drone identifications system, set up a program for utilizing industrial drones, and national government/local government-related projects such as the Gyeongsangbuk-do Innovation City Drone Zone construction project and Daegu/Gyeongsangbuk-do integrated new airport construction project.

President Kim Sung-arm said, “Through technical cooperation in future aviation industries such as drones and urban air mobility for which this agreement will lay the groundwork, we hope that our two agencies will find new business models and secure in advance the safety of this future mode of transportation.” President Kwon Yong-bok sounded more imploring. “Let’s consolidate the resources of our agencies to develop new growth engines in the aviation sector, increase the utilization of industrial drones in the public sector, and establish a system for identifying drones and standardize international standards.”
